Simple answer to each question – the R1. Whether it is the best or most satisfying is another question. The 999 is better looking and offers more stable cornering, however they do require more frequent maintenance and, barring a deal, more expensive to buy initially.

The Ducatis are nice but you are buying a name. They are good and they are fast but they still do not have the power or the price of the jap bikes.You buy a Ducati because you want a Ducati You buy a jap bike because you want to ride.The Ducati has carbon fiber skins. It is very cool until you find out it is $11k to fix the bike if it goes down. (experience) That is about what you paid for the R1.maintenance on Ducatis is a nightmare. you have to go to the dealer and they usually have to order the parts. They also usually get you for $400 to adjust valves, belts and whatever else.R1 = change the oil.get the R1 it is a much better buy. Ducs are what I call the Italin version of a harley. High maintenance, lower horsepower and people buy them for the name.Go to a local race and see what people are riding, they usually arn't on ducs for all of these reason.the r1 has 30 more horse power to the wheel. the r1 will SMOKE the DUC. I have a Dyno at my shop. i also have an R1 and a 999.

It depends on how good the rider is, just like on any bike.Sport Rider did some laps with a 1098S and a honda CBR600RR, and though the Ducati has almost twice the engine displacement it actually had a SLOWER lap time than the Honda (1:08.73 vs 1:08.42). How can this be?It depends on the rider, so whatever makes YOU happiest.

The Yamaha will quite litterally rip the Ducati apart when it comes to performance. The Yamaha is also a lot less expensive. The Ducati 999 is also quite possibly the ugliest thing Ducati ever made. I believe this makes the Yamaha a MUCH better buy.
