WD-40 and a fine steel wool, spray it let it sit and then rub it.

That can work, just be careful with the steel wool.

There is also a product at most autoparts stores or walmart, called "goo be gone" you could try. Or, I have used a little gasoline on a rag, or kerosene. (just keep away from open flames).

You can prably get alot of your pants off, but dont be suprised if its never perfect again. Thants one of thiose "life lessons" on a bike. Eventually you will sell the bike for a upgrade or get new pipes anyways.

The melted material is likely polyester fibers, which is a very common plastic called poly (ethylene terephthalate), or simply PET (the same plastic used for soft drink containers) http://www.fibersource.com/f-tutor/polyester.htm. We make gas tanks out of polyethylene, so gas won't work. I would suggest you warm it up to make is softer and scrape it with very fine steel wool. Any remaining residue could be eliminated with acetone (lacquer thinner) or nail polish remover. Remaining scratches from the steel wool can be repolished with chrome compound available in any auto parts shop.

The same receipe would work with just any plastic such as melted shoe heels marks.

I hope you did not get burn too badly. Have fun !
