I replaced the engine in my MT250 with another since the other was shot. Now I have the new engine in and everything hooked up, and it will not start. I do have spark and compression, and i'm pretty sure that I'm getting fuel. Will the bike not start without the side cover on, or without the cover over the oil pump? Also how do I know that the oil pump is working? This morning while kicking it over, I gave it a little gas and something that resembled a backfire happened, I kicked it had some smoke came out with a pop, is this bad? Also I don't think that I have gotten the exhaust on all of the way could this also keep the bike from starting?
Thanks In Advance, Jordan Hoff |

it has a has a deal where the exhaust pipe fits onto a flange it kinda fits on like =] and is held on by a bolt under the seat and is attached to the cylinder with 2 springs but its not actually bolted on.
also after the back fire type of deal it looks like it is leaking oil around the crankshaft. when i say backfire type of deal, what happened was i kicked the bike over and there was a loud pop and right were the crankshaft comes out it was smoking and i think that it might have had oil come out. i hope i didnt blow it up already. also how do i check if the oil pump is working |

If your crankshaft is leaking the oil pump is at least letting oil out into the bike, that is for sure. As for the exhaust, you are saying the round tube part isn't fitting into the cylinder right? Plus the backfire. I bet whoever sold you the motor stuck something in the hole, so stuff wouldn't get into it. Whatever was stuffed into the hole is still there and not letting air to escape. Therefore your bike backfired and let air escape from somewhere else. For an example the crankshaft? This is totally just a guess. A picture could help in this situation if you are willing and able.

I actually have 2 Honda MT250's and this engine is from the other. I did not actually know if it ran, I just took a chance, as this one is my parts bike at the moment. I did some work on the bike since my last post, so here is what happened. I got the exaust on and fitted right, and I got the bike "running", and what I mean by that is if I hold the throttle wide open while I kick it over it would start for a second or two. The throttle was wide open because I could not get the choke lever to stay on. So my assumption is that the carb need some adjustment. What should be adjusted on the carb to make it run correct? As for the oil leaking around the crankshaft, it upon closer inspection looked to thin to be oil, it looked like dirty gas or something equivalent. It is a very slow leak, and I can see the seal there around the crankshaft, but in the other engine I could not. So could this leak go away as the seal get oil up and maybe become more flexible again?
As for the oil pump, doesn't it pump oil from the tank under the seat into the small tube that runs from the pump to the intake boot? If so and the pump is working won't this tube then start to turn blue as the oil is pumped through it? But I suppose that the bike has to run for a little bit for the pump to be able to work its magic, correct? Right now I am premixing this first bit of fuel to be safe. Sorry for the long post. Any feedback, replies, or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance, :D Jordan Hoff :D |

Where I stand right now is I can kick it over and get it to start for a second or two, if I have the choke on and the throttle all of the way open. What happens is, it start and start going a little faster as if it is trying to reach idle speed, then it dies. Will not start if the throttle is not wide open, and choked. What do I need to adjust? Please Help I want to get this running by the weekend.
