Default Is the Rebel for me...?

I'm sure you've heard this question many times before...I've contacted several local dealers who have given me a variety of responses...I'm hoping to get a consensus.
I have never ridden before...I do plan on taking an approved safety riding course before I buy.
I'm looking for a commuter bike. I drive an hour to and from work each day...half city driving half highway driving (80 km/hr or 60 mph posted speed limit). Gas prices are killing me.
I want a relatively inexpensive bike that will be reliable, good on gas and won't be overstressed by the daily grind of the commute.
I'm 5'9" (31" inseam) and weigh approximately 200 lbs.
Would the Rebel 250 fit the bill?

My vote would be "Yes"

The 250 Rebel is an excellent bike for daily running & is relatively low maintainence. 60 mph shouldn't be any problem as these bikes have been known to do 75 mph or better & could probably maintain that speed all day long.

They handle very well & would be easy to manuever in city traffic.

Since you're going to be taking a Rider's Safety Course before buying a bike, you may very well find that the rider's course might provide some 250 Rebels for usage during the course, in which case, you'd have an immediate opportunity to get a feel for the bike before buying one later.

Good luck & Ride Safe.......

Also taking the riding course will give you an excellent opportunity to try out several types of bikes to determine which bike fits your body frame & is the most comfortable for you. Also when you purchase your first bike start with a cheap bike & be prepared to see it fall a few times while your getting used to riding it. That's why you don't want to spend alot of money on your first bike.

Excellent point! Whenever a new rider is about to buy a bike, I always recommend going with something decent, but used. It's not uncommon for a new rider to lay the bike down a few times while getting accustomed to riding & if one buys a brand new bike & drops it, it'd be a heartbreaker. The *ouch* is lessened if it's a used bike. Once the rider has gotten the basic riding skills & confidence level built up, the used bike can be sold in favor of something more permanent with fewer worries about dumping it.

thats me, with a 30.5" inseam. I feel the rebel is a tad small to me, turns slow speed the handlebars hit my knees. ( 1985 style handlebars) Overall For me it is a great learning bike, and boy do I learn, so many mechanical things going wrong with it... but as for the weight, I took my buddy ( not gay ) on a ride, he was like 160? and I am 200, the bike performed very good, power certainly isnt an issue, but the heckling from people was unbearable, dont ride 2 men at a time.

Top speed for me on it is like 50. around 50 I personally dont feel the "umph" it does, at 4th gear and 5th the powerband seems to be very similar... not alot of high speed power there.

I love my Rebel 2006, i could not have got a better bike. Great mpg, handleing and strong build. The only thing I have against it is that it dont come with a front mounted .50cal. So I can deal with random idiots (*admin edit*) here in tucson,az. And today is my shining example, some guy cuts me off and clips my front tire tossing me off my bike. Naturaly he took off instead of being a man/woman about it. But in the end all the damage to the bike was a dented tank and some minor cosmetic damage. I am gonna take it to the dealership to have them take a look at it in better detial then what i can do. But all I can say if that was a bigger bike i would have gotten a broken leg from it pinning my leg down.

Welcome aboard, Lynx Strife! (sorry I missed this post earlier)

Congrats on your new Rebel, but bummer about the accident. On the positive side, it sounds like you escaped any major injury. Bikes can be repaired easier than we can......

We've got to be 110% alert out there 'cause the cagers dang sure ain't always paying attention.

Ride Safe......
