It came with a 3.00-18 front [[tire]] and a 3.50-18 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via single disc in the front and a single disc in the rear. The front suspension was a  Telescopic Forks while the rear was equipped with a Swingarm. The RD400 was fitted with a 4.36 Gallon (16.50 Liters) fuel tank. The wheelbase was 52.01 inches (1321 mm) long.

The model shown below is definitely NOT a 1979 RD400F Daytona Special.  The tank and side covers are from either a 1976, 1977 or 1978 model; the seat/tail section is aftermarket, as are the DG Expansion Chamber exhaust.  The 1979 RD400F Daytona stock bodywork was white, and distinctively shaped differently from prior year RD400 models.
The cylinder head on the below bike is also from a prior year; the 1979 head was a one-piece, with a front havig a ram-air look which was taller than the back, unlike the flat shape heads of the earlier models. The graphics on the below model are also from the non-U.S. (European) market model(s).

The Yamaha RD400 was a twin, two-stroke Classic motorcycle produced by Yamaha between 1976 and 1979. It could reach a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h). Claimed horsepower was 42.11 HP (31.4 KW) @ 7500 RPM.

The engine was a air cooled twin, two-stroke. A 64.0mm bore x 62.0mm stroke result in a displacement of just 399.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a membrane.
