The 1988 MY Honda AX-1 has, at its heart, a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 249cc, single cylinder powerplant, mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a chain final drive, and can reach a maximum power output 29 horsepower and 25 Nm of torque.

This off-road machine also has fittings such as aluminum alloy wheels, an aluminum Pro-Link rear suspension, front and rear disc brakes, dual round headlights, taller cams, as opposed to the NX-250 on which it is bases, a stainless steel exhaust and an improved carburetor.

This machine was built only for the Japanese market, but was also available for purchase in Oceania, as well.
