# Torque

Torque is the twisting affect of a force acting against a body, equal to the force, multiplied by the distance of that force from the axis of rotation.

Torque = Force x Distance

- ft. lb.: T= 1 lb. x 1 ft. (The force of one pound acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one foot)
- in. lb.: T= 1 lb. x 1 in. (The force of one pound acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one inch)
- kg-m: T= 1 kg x 1 m (The force of one kilogram acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one meter)
- kg-cm: T= 1 kg x 1 cm (The force of one kilogram acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one centimeter)
- N-m: T= 1 kg-m (The force of one newton acting on the axis of rotation at a distance of one meter)

The terms of ft. lb., in. lb., kg-m, and kg-cm are all expressions of the force created by weight. The Newton-meter (N-m) is a metric term used to express the force required to move weight. One newton is the force required to accelerate a mass of 1 kg to 1 m per second.
