Overview[edit | edit source]

Harley Davidson FLTR/I Road Glide

The year 1999 was the second for the superbly equipped Road Glide, but this time around it was powered by an all-new engine. Road Glide's chrome and wrinkle black Twin Cam 88 engine became available carbureted or fuel injected, although this model was not available in all countries. The Twin Cam 88 Custom accents exclusive to this motorcycle include a frame-mounted fairing and a low windshield. Other features are an enclosed twin-oval reflector optic headlamp; a unique "H-D" embossed seat and pillion; distortion-free premium stereo sound system (new amp, 40 watts per speaker) with AM/FM/Cassette and fairing-mounted speakers (rear speakers with amplifier), all controlled via the Road Glide handlebar switches. Wiring and switches for upgrading the ride to individual tastes are included on the special Road Glide handlebar.

With a fairing interior that includes a clean-looking round gauge package which wraps cockpit-style around the rider, weather band, digital clock, radio controls for passenger, bi-directional seek, scan, music search and music scan, and 8 presets, plus a Custom solo saddle with removable passenger seat; removable Lexan windshield; Fat Bob fuel tank, adjustable rider and passenger footboards; fiberglass saddlebags with chrome slant latches and attached lids; integrated fork lock and hazard warning flasher - this is a package that would suit anybody wanting to cruise the open roads of continental America or Europe. The standard of equipment is next to none, although there is more if you need it. If the bike lacks anything it would probably be unnecessary extra weight anyway.

The five-gallon tank will get you through about 250 miles of tarmac, average mpg at a steady rate would be about 50. The bike has a ground clearance of 5.12 inches (13cm), so no off-roading with this baby: you could end up with skid marks all down your sump or worse still, no sump. The luggage box has secure barrel type locks and quick-release hardware. There is an accessory plug under the seat for electrical hook-ups. You can chose the standard production paintwork or 95th anniversary edition midnight red and champagne pearl with matching cast wheels. The individualism that can be achieved here is quite incredible.
