Overview[edit | edit source]

The 160 GS was introduced in 1962 and represented a significant departure from t eh basic design of the 150 GS. Essentially the body, motor and suspension of the 150 GS was scrapped and Piaggio went about creating the evolution of the Vespa 125/150 into the totally new 160 GS.  Some of the major changes were;

Entirely new and slimmer frame

Physically larger

Front mudguard much larger and cowls redesigned

Left side cowl now detachable and glovebox replaced with space for a sparewheel

Steering lock

Shape and size of seats changes

New engine and upgraded crankshaft and bearings were enlarged

Motor integrated with the swing-arm

Dell'Orto SI 27/23 carburetor with integrated choke

New flywheel and magneto with an output of 35 W

Suspension and brake drums changed.  Front damper and spring in a single unit

Rim now split in the middle rather than off-set
