Introduced in 1980, the XJ650 better known as the Yamaha Maxim 650 was a inline-four, shaft drive that became extremely popular. It was a high performance cruiser that continued the street bike excitement created by the Yamaha Specials.  It could reach a top speed of 122 mph (196 km/h). Max torque was 42 lb-ft (57 Nm) @ 7500 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 73 HP (54.4 KW) @ 9000 RPM.  It also came in a Turbo variant in the Yamaha XJ650L.

Engine
The Yamaha XJ650 is a motorcycle produced by Yamaha from 1980 to 1983.
The engine was a air cooled in-line four, four-stroke. A 63.0mm bore x 52.4mm stroke result in a displacement of just 653.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a double overhead cams/twin cam (dohc).

Drive
The bike has a 5-speed transmission. Power was moderated via the Wet multi-plate.

Chassis
It came with a 3.25-19 front tire and a 130/90-16 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via single disc in the front and a expanding brake in the rear. The front suspension was a  36mm Showa 140mm Wheel Travel, Adjustments For Air Pressure in the 1982 model while the rear was equipped with a Dual Showa Dampers. The XJ650 Turbo was fitted with a 5.02 Gallon (19.00 Liters) fuel tank. The wheelbase was 56.89 inches (1445 mm) long.

Announced for 1980, two versions of the 650 were produced: the sporting Seca for the European market and the Maxim for the U.S. The Maxim featured high bars, a stepped seat, a 17 rear wheel and breathing modifications including Yamaha’s swirl-inducing YICS Yamaha Induction Control System intakes designed to pacify the EP.
