Overview[edit | edit source]
Kawasaki Z 1000R
With its unique Sugomi design philosophy and a reputation for being among the most authentic Supernaked machines currently available, the standard Z1000 has just been joined for 2017 by the stunning Z1000 R Edition. Fully Euro4 compliant and sacrificing none of the power and performance of previous models, the Z1000 R Edition takes the combination of aggressive styling and incredible rider-focussed Kawasaki engineering to another level. Equipped with braking and suspension components of the highest order, the R Edition has an evocative, menacing Metallic Spark Black and Metallic Graphite Grey color scheme that is underpinned by a special graphic package complete with yellow-green accents, seat material embossed with the Z logo and further individual touches adding to an incredible visual appearance. Catching the eye too are 310mm Brembo floating front disc rotors with lateral grooves for heat dissipation acted on by state-of-the-art Brembo M50 calipers supplied by stainless steel braided brake lines. Handling care of an Öhlins S46DR1S rear shock is made easily adjustable thanks to a remote pre-load adjuster. Combined with revised front fork settings and a modified rear suspension linkage ratio, the handling of the Z1000 R Edition is both more refined and responsive. In terms of electronics, revised ECU settings account for smoother power delivery while a digital gear position indicator is augmented by and an adjustable shift-up light which illuminates the rev counter display as the desired ratio change speed is achieved. Already a highly respected and inviting machine, the announcement of the Z1000 R Edition will delight those fans of naked streetfighter class machines that like their ride to be refined yet raw.
Sculpted bodywork brings the aggressive and unique sugomi
inspired Z design to the next level, stripping off all unnecessary flourishes to
boldly highlight brutal functionality.
Enhancing the riding impact, the new engine and chassis settings
deliver a stiffer, more direct ride transforming the Z1000 into the markets
most
radical Supernaked.
The Z1000 was conceived in complete design freedom for a
completely unique experience. Each part of the Z1000 was meticulously designed
with a dual role in mind: individual functionality and realization of a
condensed mass-forward image for a truly unique riding experience.
Features
Aluminum fat bar
Ideally suited to the Supernaked character, the wide-set fat bar facilitates
rider control. The wide aluminum fat bar features a brushed finish and a
black alumite1 coating.
Sugomi Design
The Japanese word sugomi describes the intense aura or
energy given off by a person or object of greatness and felt by the viewer.
Someone, or something, possessing sugomi inspires awe, leaves an indelible
impression, is daunting in stature or ability, and commands respect. In the
new Z1000, sugomi is evident both in its fiercely intense design and the
exhilarating performance it delivers, radiating as a palpable energy.
Idealised dimensions (lower front, raised rear) and all-new tight-fitting
bodywork capture the essence of a predator crouched and ready to pounce. The
lean, muscular styling hints at the Z1000s more direct, sporty street
riding performance
Pre-chamber and short silencers
Using an under-engine pre-chamber enables smaller-volume
silencers, contributing to both mass centralisation and a more concentrated
styling. New silencer end-cap design adds to sporty looks.
Downdraft throttle bodies
In addition to contributing to performance, downdraft
throttle bodies contribute to overall mass centralisation. Revised intake
funnel length contributes to a stronger mid-range response.
Embossed seat material
Seat is embossed with Z mark further distinguishing the
bike from the standard model.
Instrumentation
The Z1000s compact instrument cluster is mounted directly to the handlebar, which added to design freedom and helped realise the compact headlamp cowl. Its low position creates an unobstructed view of the road ahead. The futuristic design of the LED tachometer and LCD screen reflects the sport potential of the new Z. Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) The more direct handling of the new Z1000 can be largely attributed to its new suspension. The new SFF-BP achieves both comfort and sport potential ideal for street riding. potential ideal for street riding. Combining the concepts of Showa SFF and BPF, the new fork features springs on both sides, with preload adjustability in the left tube and damping duties in the right tube. Mass Centralisation The exhaust system (with large pre-chamber and short silencers), Horizontal Back-link rear suspension and the use of downdraft throttle bodies are the greatest contributors to mass centralisation. The Horizontal Back-link rear suspension arrangement frees up space taken up by the Uni-Trak suspension lower linkage, enabling a larger pre-chamber, which in turn allows the use of shorter mufflers and contributes to mass centralisation. The lightweight aluminum rear frame also contributes. The result is light, sharp handling.
Lightweight wheels
Supersport-style wheels are approximately 1.5 kg lighter,
reducing unsprung weight and contributing to lighter handling.
Brembo Brake Components
To bring the already formidable braking performance of the
Z1000 to the next level, high-spec brake components like those found on the
Ninja H2R were implemented. The Brembo components featured are the best
available for a massproduction model. The highprecision operation delivers
brake force linearly, contributing to superb controllability.
Aluminum twin-tube frame The highly rigid aluminum frame features a high degree of mass centralisation, creating a balance between sharp turning and firm handling. Lightweight and highly rigid, the frame uses the engine as a stressed member. The frame offers a firm, planted feeling, good stability and light, nimble turning. The frame is a 5-piece cast aluminum construction, consisting of steering stem, left and right main frames, and two cross pieces. The two main frame components have open C-shaped cross sections and were die-cast to ensure a smooth surface finish. Larger-volume fuel tank New fuel tank design increases fuel capacity to 17 liters, offering a greater touring range. Intoxicating Intake Howl Designed specifically so that acceleration could be enjoyed aurally as well as physically, the carefully crafted auditory note of the intake is a key component of the street riding exhilaration offered by the Z1000. Idealised Riding Position An idealised riding position sees the front lowered and the rear raised, creating a more aggressive posture. The more aggressive position matches the bikes more direct throttle response and handling, putting riders in a position to fully capitalise on the Z1000s sportier street riding potential. Öhlins Rear Suspension Complementing the enhanced braking performance of the Brembo brakes, high-quality Öhlins rear suspension offers both increased ride comfort and the pride in ownership that comes from the knowledge that your machine is equipped with top-shelf components.
1,043 cm3 liquid-cooled, 4-stroke In-line Four
Powerful engine pulls strongly from all rpm and does not let
up before the redline. Adding to rider exhilaration, the engine delivers
superb response, a strong mid-range hit and an intoxicating intake howl.
More direct response thanks to new engine settings and shorter gearing adds
to the Z1000s sporty street riding potential.
Die-cast Mirrors
New mirrors have a sharper design that contributes to the
aggressive image. Die-cast mirror stays contribute to a less plastic, higher
quality feel of the cockpit.
LED headlamp
The thin, compact headlamp cowl was positioned as low as
possible, extending the line that starts from the top of the tank. This is
first time for Kawasaki to use the reflector-less LED headlamp design. Using
LED lamps allows the design to be thin, the shape contributing to the more
intense glare of the new Z1000s face, and the reflector-less design further
enhances its predatory appearance. There are four long-life, low-energy LED
bulbs: two low-beam (centre), two high-beam (outside). All four bulbs light
up when the high-beams are on. A separate LED position lamp is located on
the meter cover
R Edition Styling
Special graphics include a vivid yellow-green accent that
contrasts with the bikes
otherwise dark colouring. Special tank pads with R Edition graphics are
standard
equipment. Special frame pads with graphics add to the design.
LED taillight
New LED taillight design adds a futuristic touch to the
bikes rear
Cool Air system
With the airbox nestled between the frame beams, intake air
can be affected by engine heat. The Cool Air system routes cool air to the
airbox from ducts at the front of the side fairings, minimising performance
loss due to heated intake air. This should not be confused with Ram Air,
where force-fed air becomes pressurised in the airbox.
TECHNOLOGY
ABS
ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) ensures stable braking
performance by preventing wheel lock during braking.
Horizontal Back-link Rear Suspension
Horizontal Back-link Rear Suspension arranges its shock unit
horizontally, greatly contributing to efficient use of space and mass
centralisation.
Assist & Slipper Clutch
Based on racing technology, the Assist & Slipper Clutch acts
as both a back-torque limiter and a self-servo mechanism that enables a
lighter clutch lever pull.
Dual Throttle Valves
Dual Throttle Valves offer increased power and greater ease
of use care of a second set of ECU-controlled throttle valves.
