The BMW R 100 S was a air-cooled, four-stroke, boxer two cylinder, 2 valves per cylidner Naked motorcycle produced by BMW between 1976 and 1980. It could reach a top speed of 117 mph (189 km/h). Max torque was 56.06 ft/lbs (76.0 Nm) @ 6000 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 70.0 HP (52.2 KW) @ 7000 RPM.
History[edit | edit source]
Just a few years after introducing the BMW R90/6 and BMW R90S, BMW upped the capacity of its range-topping flat-twins to 980cc for the 1977 season in the form of the '/7' series. The latter comprised the R100/7 tourer, which used the 60bhp version of the new engine, while the cockpit-faired R100S sportster and the fully faired R100RS superbike came with 70bhp on tap. Within a couple of years the R100/7 'naked' had been re-titled R100T and gained an extra five horsepower, while the others - together with the new R100RT super-tourer - continued to use the 70bhp engine.
Engine[edit | edit source]
The engine was a air cooled air-cooled, four-stroke, boxer two cylinder, 2 valves per cylidner. A 94.0mm bore x 94.0mm stroke result in a displacement of just 980.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a overhead valves (ohv).
Drive[edit | edit source]
The bike has a 5-speed, manual transmission. Power was moderated via the dry, single plate, diaphragm spring.
Chassis[edit | edit source]
It came with a 3.25-19 front tire and a 4.00-18 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via dual 260mm discs, 2-piston calipers in the front and a 260mm drum in the rear. The front suspension was a hydraulic telescopic fork while the rear was equipped with a dual adjustable shocks. The R 100 S was fitted with a 6.34 Gallon (24.00 Liters) fuel tank. The wheelbase was 57.72 inches (1466 mm) long.
1976 BMW R 100 S[edit | edit source]
The 1976 MY BMW R 100 S has, at its heart, an air-cooled, four-stroke, 980cc, boxer twin cylinder powerhouse paired to a five-speed manual transmission that can produce a claimed 70 horsepower and 76 Nm of torque.
Standard fittings include a hydraulic telescopic fork as a front suspension, dual adjustable shocks in the rear, a dual seat, pillion grab rails, a small, nose-fairing with a windshield, an analogue instrumentation panel, dual front disc brakes coupled to a rear drum brake, die-cast aluminum wheels and a chromed, dual exhaust system.
