Engine
The engine was a liquid cooled single cylinder, two-stroke. Fuel was supplied via a membrane & variable discharge openings.
Drive
The bike has a 5-speed transmission. Power was moderated via the wet plate.
Chassis
It came with a 21" front tire and a 130/90-19 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via single disc. hydraulic single piston in the front and a single disc. hydraulic single piston in the rear. The front suspension was showa forks while the rear was equipped with a monoshock. The KX500 was fitted with a 4.0 Gallon (15.14 Liters) fuel tank.

The 1987 model was the first KX500 to use the Uni-trak suspension.
