The Suzuki GS850G was a in-line four, four-stroke Naked motorcycle produced by Suzuki between 1979 and 1988. It could reach a top speed of 126 mph (203 km/h). Max torque was 47.94 ft/lbs (65.0 Nm) @ 7500 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 78.32 HP (58.4 KW) @ 8500 RPM.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The bike was designed to be a bullet proofed "sports tourer" - in the thinking of the last 1970s - and Suzuki pooled the best of all the features, taking the engine from the Suzuki GS750, boring it to 850 providing more torque, the shaft drive from the 1100 and various other workings. The result was a solid, smooth and effortless tourer. It could run to 60mph in 4.2 seconds, but most riders snick it into high gear and let the torque cruise you up the speedo.
High bars limit the usable top speed, creating an upright "king of the road" feel. It is just fine in the mid 80s, but excursions to three figures are of short duration due to the upright position. The 5 speed box, together with digital read out is one of the best Japanese gearboxes of the era. It still feels good even by modern standards and is the smoothest of all the bikes I have ridden for many years.
It is quite heavy, as tourers with shaft drives are, but it feels deceptively light owing to relatively low center of gravity and steering geometry which makes it a pleasure to move in and out of traffic and obstacles. Economical, this example returns around 48 overall.
Engine[edit | edit source]
The engine was a air cooled in-line four, four-stroke. A 69.0mm bore x 56.4mm stroke result in a displacement of just 843.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a double overhead cams/twin cam (dohc).
Drive[edit | edit source]
The bike has a 5-speed transmission.
Chassis[edit | edit source]
It came with a 3.50-19 front tire and a 4.50-16 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via dual disc in the front and a single disc in the rear. The front suspension was a Telescopic Forks With 3-way Spring Preload while the rear was equipped with a Dual Shocks With 2-way Preload And 4-way Damping. The GS850G was fitted with a 6.08 Gallon (23.00 Liters) fuel tank. The wheelbase was 58.7 inches (1491 mm) long.
